TRIO at SAC

Funded by the Department of Education, TRIO programs help students develop the skills and motivation needed to successfully earn an associate degree. Its goal is to increase college retention and graduation rates for students in the program.

TRIO provides:

  • Individualized Guidance
  • Tutoring
  • Academic Coaching
  • Scholarships and Grants
  • Financial Coaching
  • Career and Academic Guidance
  • Cultural Activities
  • University Campus Tours

TRIO at SAC consists of five programs – three for local high schools and two for SAC students:

  • Student Support Services – S.T.E.M. (Project R.I.S.E.)
  • Student Support Services – Veterans (Project Valor)
  • Upward Bound 
  • Upward Bound Math & Science – Edison
  • Upward Bound Math & Science- Highlands  

For SAC students:

TRIO Student Support Services – STEM (also called Project R.I.S.E.)  

TRIO – SSS STEM offers opportunities to help eligible students majoring in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, as well as allied health majors.

 TRIO Student Support Services – Veterans Affairs (also called TRIO: Project Valor)  

TRIO: Project VALOR provides opportunities for academic development, assists student veterans with basic college requirements, and serves to motivate student veterans toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. 

For high school students:

TRIO Upward Bound – Math and Science 

Who can participate:

Students selected into the TRIO UBMS program are enrolled full-time at Edison High School or Highlands High School in the San Antonio Independent School District. In addition, each student selected: 

  • Will be a first-generation college student (neither parent has completed a bachelor’s degree).
  • Is from a family earning a limited income as determined by taxable income level and family size.
  • Have chosen to pursue a degree in one of the STEM fields when they go to college.

TRIO Upward Bound 

Who can participate:

Students selected for the TRIO Upward Bound program are enrolled full-time at Burbank High School in San Antonio Independent School District. In addition, each student selected:

  • Will be a first-generation college student (neither parent has completed a bachelor’s degree).
  • Is from a family earning a limited income as determined by taxable income level and family size.
  • Is available for active participation in programs that help students prepare for and apply to the college(s) of their choice.

TRIO is funded by grants from the US Department of Education. The grants support initiatives to help low-income students, first-generation students, and students with disabilities. SAC’s TRIO – SSS programs have been serving students since 2015.
