Vela's View: Finding Our Future

by Dr. Robert Vela

Volume 1, Issue 5 - November/October 2016

Vela's View is a reoccurring column about the importance of education and higher learning.  Written from the perspective of Dr. Robert Vela, President of San Antonio College, it provides insight into the world of higher education and addresses topics related to education as a whole.

The Fall 2016 semester is almost coming to a close, but what we have been able to do this year is extraordinary!

Among our many efforts, I’m happy to report that our Outreach & Recruitment department has successfully launched a new community program called Find Your Future (FYF.)

The FYF program launched in late September and has continued throughout the semester, making several stops at local high schools to inspire students to pursue higher education. Aimed at high school seniors, the FYF program provided strategic outreach to nearly 3,000 students in SAC’s own “backyard.”

The tour stopped at five local high schools, including: Edison, Jefferson, and Lanier High Schools in SAISD, Southwest High School in Southwest ISD and Lee High School in NEISD.

As part of the presentation, SAC introduced the students to a nationally-known motivational speaker who was raised right here in San Anto. Roy Juarez Jr., who was a homeless teen at 14, explained to students the value and importance of higher education using “real talk” and humor to tell his story of overcoming adversity to become a college graduate and small business owner.

In addition, members of the SAC Outreach & Recruitment Team were in attendance at each of the high school visits to help students learn more about the Alamo Colleges and help them complete the AlamoENROLL process.

The FYF Tour is a unique initiative that I created, along with our team here at SAC, to ensure that we are doing everything possible to outreach to the students in our own backyard. We are tracking the students who applied for admission, and we hope to welcome them to SAC once they graduate from high school.

Until then, we are gearing up for the Spring semester which will begin on January 17, 2017. Registration is now open for all students. Go to alamo.edu/sac to learn more.

Happy Holidays!
