What is the Drama program?

At its most elemental level, drama is a meaningful story told through a character or character’s actions on a stage, all designed to communicate to an engaged audience. It is a timeless form of creative expression that can take on many forms and genres but has the human condition and our universal experiences as core elements for the stories that are shared by actors through speech, gesture, music, and dance.

What will I learn?

The drama program prepares students for transfer to four-year universities with a diverse program of academic, aesthetic, and technical experiences; and offers both majors and interested students the opportunity to perform, design, build, and run theatrical productions. Acting, makeup, lighting, and stagecraft are all options for interested students.

What can I do with this course of study?

The drama program provides students the opportunity to explore theater and the various theater genres and their relationships to other art forms and creative enterprises. For majors, students will hone their abilities in areas of performance, production, design and/or playwriting, and will develop knowledge and skills in realizing a variety of theatrical styles and building a foundation for careers in fields such as acting, directing, scriptwriting, casting, producing, set designing, audio/visual technology, makeup, costume designing, teaching or acting coach.A drama background can also be the foundation for a professional career in law, counseling, education, arts management radio, television or film.

What's special about our program?

The drama program offers many opportunities to students to experience all facets of the professional theatre world, be it performing on stages, design & directing opportunities, and networking throughout the Greater San Antonio Area, and in two performance spaces at the college, the 1,004-seat McAllister Fine Arts Center, and the more intimate 176-seat McCreless Theater.

There are limitless possibilities of what kind of career a person could obtain with a focus in this area of study.
