What is the Computer Information Systems program?This program offers you hands-on experience with computer hardware, software and systems to develop the skills you need for today’s workplace computer systems, and the problem-solving ability to work with new technology as it evolves. What will I learn?You’ll learn the industry standard programming languages used most today, including Java, C++, Visual Basic.NET, SQL, PHP and Linux. You’ll also learn how to program web pages using HTML, JavaScript, Windows and more. You’ll gain the skills required for important industry certifications, including A+, CISCO CCNA, Microsoft Windows Server and Linux+. Cybersecurity is also part of your curriculum, giving you a background in network and system security including firewalls, intrusion detection, forensics, and TCP/IP skills. |
What can I do with this course of study?This program will give you the skills to start your career as an information technology specialist, network engineer, LAN administrator or systems specialist. You can also expand your opportunities and earning potential by transferring to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in CIS or a related field. SAC Cyber Workforce Development Project | Link
OVERVIEW
This scholarship focuses on the NICE Cybersecurity workforce framework roles. The roles targeted are:
Technical Support Specialist: Network Operations Specialist; Systems Security Analyst; Cyber Defense Incident Responder; Cyber Defense Analyst; and System Administrator.
ACADEMIC AND PREREQUISITE REQUIREMENTS:
- United States citizen or lawful permanent resident
- Must have 1) a high school diploma or GED; 2) at least one year of prior work experience as a first responder, in the military, or in business/finance and/or an undergraduate or graduate student who is pursuing a degree in criminal justice or finance: 3) enrolled in targeted SAC courses full-time.
Scholarship Recipients shall:
- Maintain full-time student status in one of the three Certificate programs offered at SAC: 1) Information Assurance and Cyber Security Level 1 Certificate; 2) Computer Forensics, Level 1 Certificate; 3) Cyber First Responders Occupational Skills Award
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA for all courses
- Complete the certificate requirements successfully
- Participate in the San Antonio College chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) club. (ACM fee will be paid by the grant)
- Participate in National Cyber League competitions or similar competitions (fee will be paid by the grant)
- Pass the CompTia Security+ certification(Certification exam fee will be paid for by grant)
- Receive full tuition support as well as textbooks, fees, professional certifications fees, and supplies.
Students will be assigned class schedules based on experience/proficiency Cyber roles and will not deviate from class schedule.
All course must be taken at SAC-In person or remote learning

The Teach Cyber program, will include:
- A two-day, on-campus workshop and weekly follow up meetings online for two months after to inspire and better prepare participants for transitioning to adjunct or tenured cybersecurity teaching positions;
- Financial support for participants who wish to earn a bachelor’s or master’s degree in cybersecurity to ensure they have the proper academic credentials to teach postsecondary courses;
- Assistance with finding employment with prospective or existing CAE programs;
- Mentorship throughout their first two semesters of teaching to ensure Teach Cyber! graduates remain in the classroom.
All Teach Cyber! participants will have the opportunity to earn degrees in cybersecurity -- either a bachelor’s or master’s depending on their current credential -- from CAE-designated universities at no cost to them to better prepare them for the transition to teaching. After graduation, all Teach Cyber! participants must teach for an existing or prospective CAE-designated program for the same amount of time as they received scholarship support.
All participants will receive up to one year of mentoring support via individual outreach and at least monthly video conferences with current faculty, and fellow Teach Cyber! graduates who have been placed in adjunct or tenured roles at community colleges and university programs throughout the Southwest.
