What is the program?

This interdisciplinary program (also known as MAS) focuses on the history, culture, language, arts and contributions of Mexican Americans in the United States, along with the issues and challenges relevant to this population.

What will I learn?

You’ll explore Mexican American history, politics, literature and arts and develop written and verbal Spanish language skills. You’ll gain the ability to work effectively with diverse populations and formulate a deeper understanding of Mexican American culture and its complex history. You’ll also hone your research, critical thinking and communication skills.

What can I do with this course of study?

You’ll be prepared to continue your education at four-year universities. SAC has articulation agreements with institutions including UTSA and OLLU, which offer bachelor’s degree programs in MAS. This degree can serve as a pathway to careers in the fields of healthcare, social service, education, medicine, public health, government, cultural arts, education, law, criminal justice and business.

What is special about the program?

The Mexican American/Latino population will be the majority population in Texas by 2025. The U.S. Mexican-American/Latino population is expected to triple by 2050. Both public and private sector organizations will provide more services to this growing population. MAS prepares you for this significant population shift and offers a broader perspective of the experiences of this community.
