A Rainbow Heritage Month 2024

Rainbow Heritage Love, Always_to_submit.png

Rainbow Heritage Month is how SAC honors LGBTQIA+ History Month from mid-October to mid-November. This year, our theme is Love, Always. "We're Here, We're Queer" became a powerful rallying cry in the 1960s and endures today. Join us for a series of programming that considers the timelessness of that statement: how people we would call "queer" or LBGTQIA+ have always existed and will continue to live, thrive, and love.

Coming Out Day

Date: Thursday, Oct. 10
Time: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: SAC Mall
Description: You are invited to SAC’s observance of Coming Out Day on Thursday, October 10 from 10-1 in the Mall. Join us to be in community, take photos with our “Coming Out” door, and design your own slap bracelets! LGBTQIA+ friendly community organizations and entrepreneurs will be tabling for an affirming resource fair. Students will have a chance to enter a raffle to win swag OR a pair of tickets to the Rocky Horror Show at San Pedro Playhouse on a date of the winners’ choice. For a minimum donation of $1, you can also sign our Progress Pride Flag in support, with proceeds donated to a local LGBTQIA+ charity.

Rainbow Heritage Month Creative Expression Contest

Deadline: Friday, Nov. 15, by 4 p.m.
Contest Award Amount: Three scholarship prizes equaling $500 eac.h
Prompt: "We're Here We're Queer" became a powerful rallying cry in the 1960s and endures today. We invite you to consider the timelessness of that statement: how people we would call "queer" or LBGTQ2IA+ have always and will always be here. Using any medium of your choice, consider the past, present, and future of queerness, and the spaces in which queer people have or will inhabit and create.

Time: All day
Location: SAC Campus
Description: Help us Celebrate Rainbow Heritage Month by participating in the Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA) Spirit Days! Dress up to celebrate the diverse fashion and pride movements that have shaped our community. Then, join us at 3 pm each day in the Loften Student Center Pride Room for a photo opportunity and our weekly GSA Meeting!

Spirit Day Themes:

Roaring 20s - Queer Glamour (Oct. 15): Step into the Jazz Age and channel LGBTQ+ icons of the era! Think bold flapper looks, sharp suits, pearls, and feathers. Let’s embrace the underground queer culture that defied conventions in style!
Groovy 60s - Peace, Love, & Pride (Oct. 22): Celebrate the era of liberation! Show off your inner flower child with tie-dye, fringe, and bright colors, representing the peace and love that fueled the beginnings of the LGBTQIA+ Rights Movement.
Rocking 80s - 90s - Bold, Proud, & Fierce (Oct. 29): From the rise of queer visibility in the 80’s to the activism of the 90’s, show off your fierce side! Go all out with neon, leather jackets, grunge, or drag-inspired looks. Honor the fearless trailblazers who fought for equality and visibility.
Y2K – Queer Futurism (Nov. 12): Relive the early 2000s with pride! Sport your Y2K styles — think low-rise jeans, metallics, and edgy accessories — while celebrating the progress made and looking to a bright, inclusive future for the LGBTQIA+ community.

Trans Day of Remembrance

Date: Wednesday Nov. 20
Time: 12 p.m.
Location: SAC Mall
Description: Join the SAC community in observing the 2024 Transgender Day of Remembrance on Wednesday November 20 at noon in the SAC mall. Starting in 1999, Transgender Day of Remembrance has served as a way to honor and remember the lives of transgender people that have been lost to violence, while also raising awareness about anti-trans discrimination in the United States and around the world. As we remember to Love, Always during Rainbow Heritage Month, SAC will host a vigil for the trans lives lost to violence over the past year. This event is free and open to all.
