The Gilman Program, part of the U.S. State Department, lists SAC as a top producing institution for sending students to study abroad.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, part of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) in the State Department, has congratulated San Antonio College as a “Top Producer” Institution for sending students to study abroad. The inaugural award was given this year for the 2016-17 academic year.

The Gilman program highlighted colleges and universities for their success in sending student populations who traditionally do not have many opportunities to study abroad. Furthermore, SAC was recognized for accomplishments in multiple categories:

  • Students from Two-Year Institutions
  • Racial and Ethnic Minority Students
  • Students with Disabilities
  • STEM Students.

“As a public institution, San Antonio College welcomes students from all walks of life and various nationalities,” said SAC President, Dr. Robert Vela. “We are proud of our diversity and we encourage our students to pursue educational experiences outside of the United States to further their understanding of the world at large.”

The Gilman program, has a mission to make study abroad more accessible and inclusive for American Students. Since Congress established the Gilman Program in 2000, more than 25,000 undergraduate students who receive Pell Grants have studied or interned abroad as Gilman scholars in 145 countries.
