San Antonio College Empowerment Center Opens New Location
December 4, 2024
The San Antonio College (SAC) Empowerment Center celebrated the grand opening of its newly expanded location on Wednesday, Dec. 4, marking a significant milestone in its mission to support underrepresented and non-traditional students. The new facility promises to enhance its range of services and provide a welcoming environment for education and community engagement.
The new Empowerment Center, which has been partially funded by a $1 million allocation secured by Congressman Greg Casar, is designed to expand access to higher education for low-income, at-risk, and adult learners. The funding, part of a federal Community Project Funding initiative, enables SAC to create a comprehensive "one-stop shop" for educational and support services tailored to veterans, Dreamers, working parents, and others seeking a return to education
Empowerment Center Director Dr. Mary Helen Vera shared the vision for the enhanced services: "What we are going to be doing is expanding—adding services for military families, career development, and parent outreach. We’re seeing an increase in referrals from community organizations, and this new facility allows us to provide tailored support to help individuals transition into college and career pathways."
The expanded center will feature a Transition to College Career Lab, a college enrollment lab, and larger spaces for classes and community gatherings. New services include parent engagement programs and a lactation room for student parents, acknowledging the growing need for family-oriented resources. The newly created Dream Center will also offer a dedicated space for student leadership groups to collaborate and plan initiatives.
“For many, returning to education can feel intimidating,” Vera explained. “Our one-on-one services ensure individuals who may not have access to technology or feel comfortable navigating the process get the personalized help they need.”
The Empowerment Center's programs aim to bridge the gap between community referrals and college enrollment by offering hands-on guidance to those who might otherwise face barriers. This initiative aligns with SAC's broader mission to foster educational equity and success for all its students.
This expansion exemplifies the power of federal investment in education and the local commitment to providing equitable opportunities for all San Antonians.
