3D Print Studio

 

3D Print Studio is available to all San Antonio College's currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. Use for classwork, research, or a personal project. Conveniently located inside the Student Mega Lab room 502. No reservations are required and our 3D Printer experts are ready to assist you in the creation of your 3D project.

Creating your 3D Print
  • Visit the Student Mega Lab (MLC 502) for a consultation and estimate.
  • Note: you will not be charged if the error is a result of equipment failure (filament jam, print head clog, etc..) however you will be charged if the error was caused by a design flaw or by not enough backfill or supports. 
  • Maximum of 8 continuous hours of printing for each print allowed Monday – Thursday.
  • Maximum of 4 continuous hours of printing for each print allowed Friday only.
  • Note: Any job requiring more than 240 minutes (4 hours) of print time, please contact for a time estimate.
    Once you approve the estimate and your project is printed, we will send you an invoice which can be paid for at Alamo Marketplace Mall.

How to pay for 3D Projects

Once you have received your quote from the Mega Lab staff you will be directed to pay in “Alamo Market Place Mall” 3D Print Studio Store. Follow the instructions on the screens and make your payment. The Mega Lab will receive an email notifying them the project has been paid. The project will then be printed.

  • Cost
    • Core colors - $0.14 per gram
    • Specialty Colors printing - $0.21 per gram
    • Staff and faculty pay $0.07 per gram for Core colors and $0.14 per gram for Specialty colors.
  • Maximum of 8 continuous hours of printing for each print allowed Monday – Thursday.
  • Maximum of 4 continuous hours of printing for each print allowed Friday only.
  • How large can the 3D printer print an project?
    • Largest MakerBot Design is 9.9” x 7.8 x 5.9” (W x L x H)
    • Largest Prusa Design is 9.84” x 8.3” x 8.3” (W x L x H)

3D Printer Policies
  • Most equipment is available on a first come, first served basis. Appointments can be made for our 3D printers.
  • The Print Studio is open to the faculty, staff and current students.
  • Minors 14 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Printer use is restricted to 1 printer per person at a time so that as many patrons as possible can have a chance to use the printers.
  • The 3D Print Studio will be staffed at all times so if the staff member is out momentarily, please do not use specialized equipment (3D printers, scanners, etc.) until the staff member returns.
  • Visitors are responsible for the safe and responsible use of all equipment. Disregard for 3D Print Studio policies, equipment, or supplies may result in a ban from the Print Studio. If in doubt, please ask MegaLab staff for assistance.
Supported 3D Print Projects

All objects printed on the 3D printer need to comply with the Alamo Colleges Copyright Policy, the Intellectual Property Policy, and the Appropriate Use of Information Resources Policy. Items deemed physically impossible (design causing a print failure, not enough supports, no back-fill, etc.) will be rejected. Items that will not physically fit on our build platform will be rejected or resized.

Files Supported -Although any 3D modeling software can be used, all files submitted must be either in .STL, .OBJ, or .THING format. Files that are not in one of these formats cannot be printed.
