Academic Advising
American Sign Language and Interpreter Training Academic Advising Labs Faculty and Staff
The American Sign Language and Interpreting Program within the Languages @SAC Department works closely with students to ensure they have access to college and department information that will allow them to navigate successfully through their journey to graduation at San Antonio College.
For students enrolling in the program, the first step is to declare their major. Students may do this at Admissions and Records (Fletcher Administration Center Room 216). The major code for Interpreting students is ASL I and for DSS students is ASL S. Once a student has declared their major, they will follow the degree plan of that year.
Students enrolling in program classes who are transfer students or have prior signing experience are encouraged to meet with the ASL Program prior to registration. A decision will be made regarding the acceptance of signing/interpreting experience or placement after completion of the in-house skills assessment. Prior students who have not taken a sign class in the last year will also need to take an in-house placement before registering for an American Sign Language class.
It is important that all incoming students, who have completed the enrollment process, meet early with the ASL/IT certified advisor. Students should make an appointment to meet with the ASL advisor, Ms. Stephanie Burton, sburton23@alamo.edu, to ensure accurate course sequence and availability in desired classes.

- Try to complete the core classes (English, Math, Speech, Drama, Government or Psychology) before you begin the interpreting skill classes (Interpreting I, II, III). The second year of the program you will need to spend as many hours as possible in the Sign Language Lab and Resource Center.
- All department courses are offered in both day and evening sessions. Not every course is offered each semester (See course calendar for specific information).
- Following college guidelines, American Sign Language classes have a maximum enrollment of 18 and a minimum enrollment of 15. Interpreting skill classes have a maximum enrollment of 8 and a minimum enrollment of 7. If student enrollment does not satisfy the minimum number of students, the class will be canceled for that semester.
- Take your ASL classes consecutively – do not skip a semester. If you do it will delay the completion of the program by a semester.
- Students who take American Sign Language to satisfy a foreign language requirement need to register for ASL classes under (SGNL).
- Interpreting majors who plan to transfer to a four-year institution following their interpreting degree and who wish to satisfy the foreign language requirement, also need to register for ASL classes under (SGNL).
